Why do you do your job?

I get to work with fascinating personalities all day. Sounds like a lot of blowing smoke, but the people I work with are genuinely brilliant and great at doing their jobs. I work fairly closely with our founders and CEO, for example, and am really grateful that our employees have such direct access to them. They are visionary and when you talk to them and try to tell a story with them, you can tell that they really believe in what we’re doing. Working alongside that kind of passion is energizing and helps us build awesome stories. I think the rest of the communications organization feels that energy, too.

What is something you really care about bringing about in either your job, your team, or this industry?

The most important thing to me is bringing about a sense of reason in an otherwise very sensational market. People sell on fear and that’s not what we’re about here. Honestly, it presents a big challenge for us in the marketing department because it’s very easy to scare people in this industry. There are legitimate security issues out there that directly impact people’s and companies’ private information, but we always want to make sure we’re informing people reasonably and factually. I personally wouldn’t want to be sold to out of fear. The world has enough stress in it, I don’t want to be scared into buying something.

Why the security industry?

I’ve always been attracted to working in a more technical environment because you have to dig in and really learn something completely new. Growing up, I never thought I’d be spending my days talking about mobile malware, but that’s the greatest part of it. I’ve learned an entirely new vocabulary and become immersed in a whole new culture of people — security people. It’s awesome. The thing is, security has so many connections to what’s going on in the world today. Geopolitical issues, domestic security issues, everything is revolving around security today. I feel fortunate to be educated through this industry, an industry that has grown rapidly in the last year alone.

What is one of your favorite memories from the team?

IMG_2565When I first came on board at Lookout I was only a few months out from getting married. My new coworkers had promised me a congratulatory happy hour and because we’d only worked together for a couple months, the most they really knew about me was that I’m from Hawaii. When I showed up at the bar my coworkers had found and bought a nearly life-sized hula-girl piñata (disappointingly, not filled with candy!) and, in lieu of a traditional “bachelorette” sash, made me carry it around San Francisco the whole night. I not-so-inconspicuously left it in the restaurant. We’re not afraid to poke a little fun at each other here, clearly, but that’s what makes the everyday so fun.
